Body Wash vs. Face Wash

It may be more convenient, but here’s why you shouldn’t use body wash on your face.

The skin on our face is different from the skin on the rest of our body.  Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive, which makes it more prone to breakouts and inflammations.  It needs a gentler cleanse.

Even with oily skin, sulfates in body wash and bar soap can overstrip and dry out your skin, leading to dullness and potential breakouts.

Face cleansers are formulated to be more gentle and compatible with our facial skin, which ultimately helps maintain a healthy skin barrier.  Our skin barrier is slightly acidic and the surface contains a thin film known as the acid mantle.  The acid mantle is our first line of defense — it has the important job of protecting us from environmental stressors like pollution, UV rays, and bacteria.  When harsh soaps are used on our faces, it can compromise the acid mantle and skin barrier, leading to loss of essential moisture and nutrients, flakiness, and redness.  A damaged skin barrier can allow external irritants to get in our skin more easily and can cause premature aging.

So while cleansing your face is vital for healthy skin, be sure you’re using the right product.  At MANTL, we formulated our Face + Scalp Cleanser with these factors in mind.  That’s why our Cleanser is made with naturally-derived ingredients and is free of harsh sulfates, parabens, and synthetic dyes.  It’s also pH-balanced, which means that it is bio-compatible with your skin’s acid mantle to help maintain a healthy barrier.
