It seems easy to say this once you've taken the leap, but finally deciding to shave your head completely bald is life changing. Prior to that point most balding men dread the idea of losing their hair and struggle with the emotional anguish the process causes.

Most don't know how amazing it feels to shave their heads completely bald. They're afraid of looking like a convict or that people will think they are losing their hair. It's not something everyone can do, and even if you're willing to take the plunge, it's easy to get cold feet.

Shaving your head is the most liberating thing you can do for yourself. It's an act of freedom and strength, not one of weakness or fear.

The solution? Just do it! If you've ever thought about shaving your head but were too scared to take the plunge, this article is for you. Here are 10 reasons shaving your head could be one of the best things you do in your life to date...

#1 – Shave Years off Your Appearance

Male pattern baldness affects around 40% of all men by the age of 35 and 50% of males by the time they reach 50. This progressive condition initially causes your hairline to recede before your hair begins to thin and eventually fall out around the crown and the temples.

Every man wants to look younger, right? Well, shaving your head is the closest thing you can get to looking ten years younger. It may sound superficial, but it's true. At first, it may seem like an extremely frightening thing to do, especially if you're just starting out with losing your hair.

While you may be tempted to mask your receding hairline with a carefully cultivated piece of styling or some other temporary fix, however, take it from me that this is completely ineffective and merely delaying the inevitable.

It’s almost impossible to hide the effects of male pattern baldness. In fact, the best you’ll achieve is drawing attention to the afflicted areas.

However, there is no need to worry because many balding men have actually gone through this before and can vouch for the fact that shaving their head completely has made them feel much better about themselves. This conveys a strong sense of confidence and youthfulness to others.

#2 – Women will love you

As a bald head is commonly associated with virility and masculinity, it’s little wonder that modern women find men like Jason Statham enduringly attractive.

You see, when a man goes bald or cuts his hair short, he appears more masculine. It's because this is an evolutionary thing - it shows that you're not trying to hide something.

These qualities make them very desirable. Who can resist the allure of someone so perfect (at least on the outside)?

Cast illusions aside, I was intrigued to find out that there’s a little more science behind this than initially meets the eye, with a bald head known to offer a number of proven social advantages.

Research in Social Psychological and Personality Science has explored these in detail by measuring how women perceive men with shaved heads in comparison to those who have a full head of hair.

Naturally, they have a reputation for being more agreeable and dominant, while they’re also perceived to be around 6% more confident and 13% stronger.

Women are therefore more likely to see these desirable characteristics in bald men who radiate with primal essence. This instantly makes them more immediately attractive and arguably more viable as potential life partners.

#3 – There’s Cost Savings With Shaving

The current generation of men are spending more than ever on their hair, with DIY clipper cuts gradually becoming a thing of the past.

So, how do we accrue savings?

To start with, there are the cost savings of not having to purchase hair products, such as gels, hair sprays, and mousse. These products can run from $8 to >$25 a month. If you buy the higher-priced items, it could be over $100 a month on some of these products alone.

Next, there is a significant savings in haircuts. One survey reports that the average man spends $35 monthly on haircuts. For men that are bald, the cost savings is even higher when they consider that most of these men will stop needing haircuts altogether until their hair reaches about 1/2" in length.

There is also an opportunity cost to shaving your head completely bald. This does not necessarily mean that you could have made money doing something else, but it is a way to put a dollar value on the time that you are shaving your head. Instead of spending 30 minutes to an hour every other day shaving your head completely bald, you can do another activity during this time.

OK, so you’ll still need to buy some shampoo and conditioner to keep your head clean and moisturised, but this should distract from the huge savings that you’ll be able to make over time.

Even if you follow my lead and initially use a mobile hairdresser to shave your head (I simply couldn’t bring myself to do it for the first time), a professional clip will not cost the earth. At the same time, it’s relatively cost-effective to maintain this look.

So, if you want an economical solution to your male pattern baldness, shaving your head is the way to go!

#4 – Place a Spotlight on Your Best Features

A ragged or weather-worn hairstyle can quickly detract from your positive features and other elements of your look.

Whether you have wavy locks, voluminous curls, or a luscious head of hair, everyone has features that make them unique. When you shave your head completely bald, those features will now be the focal point of your look!

For example, facial structure can make a person appear more attractive with a smooth dome as opposed to locks. Eyebrows also stand out on a shaven head. In addition, if you happen to have a gorgeous set of eyes, then shaving your head will allow them to shine even brighter since they'll no longer be covered by hair.

Growing a beard enhances this effect, as it draws the eye further down and allows your carefully cultivated look to truly flourish.

#5 – You'll look more athletic and muscular

S1tudies have shown that women perceive men to be 13% stronger than those with a full head of hair. There’s actually a scientific explanation for this particular finding, which explains why bald men such as me appear slightly more athletic and muscular than we actually are.

In simple terms, shaving your hair reduces the mass of your head and makes it look smaller. When there isn't any hair on the scalp, it creates shadows that accentuate prominent cheekbones or facial features.

This automatically makes your upper body appear bigger, creating the appearance of a far broader and more masculine frame. One such sportsman is WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin, who became an absolute ring icon during his career.

You’ll find that your neck, shoulders and upper chest muscles will instantly appear bigger after you shave your head, while the lack of hair will ensure that people pay close attention to the shape of your upper body.

If you want further proof, ask yourself why so many competitive bodybuilders (think of Phil Heath, for example) choose to shave their heads?

This is because it actively improves body composition and symmetry, and if it’s good enough for those guys, it should be good enough for you too, right?

#6 – You’ll Take a Weight off Your Shoulders (No Pun Intended)

When struggling with hair loss it is not uncommon to suffer from anxiety and depression at the mere thought of going bald. With every failed remedy or treatment, your self-esteem plummets further and sense of desperation grows more palpable.

When a man's hair starts thinning or realizes he's going bald, he usually feels depressed and tends to be very self-conscious about himself. He will soon realize that wearing hats and other disguises is not solving his problem, nor does it help boost his confidence.

Sure, it takes a little time to get used to having no hair on your head, but it is strangely empowering as the stress of hiding your receding hairline suddenly (and thankfully) becomes a thing of the past.

Several studies have shown that men who choose to deal with their hair loss problems by shaving off all their hair tend to feel much better about themselves and more at peace with the world.

Shaving bald could enable you to embrace reality and refocus on the essential things in life.

#7 – You may enjoy better career progression

How does shaving your head make you go from good to great, from mediocre to heroic?

Shaving your head bald is an incredibly bold move for any guy to make at the best of times, but it is also a brilliant move when you think about the consequences.

Now you may think we’re overreaching here, but some scientific studies suggest that bald men are likely to enjoy faster and better career progression.

While many of these studies have been conducted in U.S. society, their findings are fascinating and well worthy of consideration. It helps you let go of any insecurities you may have about your appearance. It makes you look more energetic and gives people the impression that you are very active. And, you instantly feel more comfortable in social situations.

It takes major guts to stand there with that razor and take all that hair off because you know people are going to stare at you for doing it. It's not just your friends either - strangers will judge you based on how bold of a statement you're making by having no hair on your head.

This is why so many men never do it despite thinking about it constantly throughout their lives.

But, once they finally get up the courage to take what would appear to be an incredibly drastic measure, there are often immediate benefits that make them think, "why did I wait so long to do this?"

Baldness is actually a sign of dominance. The fact that you have no hair on your head can be seen as incredibly powerful and even dominant - something which is why more and more men are deciding to take the plunge every day.

These characteristics are also often associated with leadership, meaning that employers are more likely to seriously consider applicants with shaved heads for senior management roles.

#8 – Summers are breezy

Be honest, have you ever found yourself wishing that you were bald during the hot, sun-kissed months of summer? If so, you’re not alone, as excess sweat and moisture makes your hair feel heavy and, at times, impossible to style.

This can leave you looking ragged, while those of you with an excess of hair may also end up feeling far hotter than you actually are.

Again, hats fit, and they actually look good!

The contrast with a bald head is quite remarkable, as even during the hottest days, you’ll be able to enjoy a refreshing summer breeze and avoid the risk of overheating.

Just a note of caution: if you shave your head in time for summer, ensure that you protect it against the elements. Most importantly, remember to apply a generous helping of high-factor sunscreen to the scalp to minimise the risk of burning, and be sure to invest in a light hat for times when you spend hours out in the sun.

#9 – You’ll Have a More Efficient Metabolism

One of the main triggers of male pattern baldness is high testosterone levels within the body, which often converts to DHT and harms the hair follicles on the scalp.

Despite this, we bald men can seek solace because high levels of testosterone have a positive influence on other areas of our lives.

This is known to create a faster and more efficient metabolism, making it easier to maintain a healthy weight, build muscle and develop a far better shape. So while you may be losing your hair, this could be a positive indication that you’ll find it far easier to stay in shape and avoid becoming overweight as you grow older and your metabolism typically slows down.

Having high levels of testosterone in the body also leads to a lower concentration of fat in the face. It shows that one of the key triggers of male pattern baldness is also responsible for many other positive things.

#10 –You’ll Be at a Lower Risk of Illness

We close with a big one-now we’re thinking big picture. A  recent UK study found that if you start to go bald at a young age, you’ll have a 45% less chance of getting prostate cancer than someone with a full head of hair.

This is once again due to high testosterone levels in the body, as long-term exposure to large quantities of DHT is thought to dramatically reduce the growth of tumours.

These findings were entirely opposed to those of historical studies, which suggested that high testosterone levels actively increased the growth of tumours.

So, if you’re like me and begin to notice your hair falling out in clumps before the age of 30, you may well be at a lower risk of illnesses such as prostate cancer in later life. Take a moment to stop and appreciate your good fortune, you young balding gents.

Final Thoughts

Due to popular demand, we have decided to release our secret and expose the best kept dirty little secrets in the history of shaving: head shaving. Why? For too long, men have been playing it safe, hiding behind a thin layer of hair just to conform with society's standards.

The barbers worldwide will all tell you that they see mostly bald heads in their chairs, and yet most men are still afraid of going even an extra step close to having no hair at all.
